Wife's bike we picked up earlier this year . Had less than 2k miles. It's a 2 speed automatic . You do have to shift from neutral to first to 2nd. and down shift as necessary . It's actually a hoot to ride !
Had to rebuild the carbs ,new floats and needles but after that it runs very well .

NICE! Honda built some really innovative bikes that were just ahead of their time so no one was willing to adapt to them. If I could teach people to ride motorcycles without the need to shift with a clutch... that would be amazing in terms of getting them to not worry about being so afraid of the bike! This was probably a more expensive bike back in the day which kept their production numbers low I'm sure. That's the only reason we don't see more automatic bikes out there which is a huge shame! Good find.

I found this 1979 CM400 T on Craig's List back in early January , a one owner bike . The gentleman had passed away and his son was selling ,so, I was buying ! $600.00 was the magic buying price , it was a little crusty but a very original bike . After several weeks of a couple hours a day of polishing and cleaning we have a very nice bike again . I'm sure the son could walk by it and never suspect it was his fathers bike !
Very little mechanical work , basic maintence , and it runs and drives very nicely .
This is the mate to my wife's 1981 CM400 A ,kinda like matching shirts back in the day but way cooler .

That bike is so neat. It has to be one of the easiest bikes to learn on plus it's not a tiny engine. It will actually go pretty good I bet. 70-80mpg?

Not sure about MPG but I do know it's faster than my 1975 CB500T !
