They may be in as bad or worse shape than the original (ie-dry rotted, and/or chrome pitted). In the case of my replacement front brake cable the rubber boot near the drum end had melted into the other cables in the set.

I had to replace the front brake cable just a few weeks ago. I guess I got lucky and found the part in great shape on eBay. Not having such good luck with the clutch cable, though. The cables currently listed on eBay are all for pre-64 model years. My bike's a 66...anyone have insight as to the difference in cables and where I might find one for a 66?
