And now the easy way

Disconect the brake linkage and its anchor (this is upside down in BTLs picture) remove the smaller of the two chrome nuts on the spindle.
The spindle should then knock through.
The spacer near the brake plate will fall out and the brake and wheel can be removed without disturbing the chain.
