Default Throttle Issues

After going on my first ride on the bike after thirty years of sitting it's running surprisingly well. The throttle is the only issue I'm running into currently. After giving it throttle it doesn't release. I don't think it's the cable, even though the cable is old, I think it has to be the Carb. Do you think it's just catching, and if so what is the best way to fix it? I've already cleaned the carb all out. Thanks.

Congrats on your first ride. I'm still a few months away from that big event, so I'm a little jealous.

Just curious - why don't you think the cable could be a factor? Was the cable completely lubricated when the bike was recently worked on? It won't take much resistance in the cable to hang up the throttle.

Does your bike have the internal cable slide in the twist grip? If so, is the track and/or cable pull smooth and lubricated?

The cable is in the handle and was lubricated when put back together. I guess I question whether it's the cable because you can turn the throttle back and forth fine but it seems like something is getting hung up inside. Plus the throttle doesn't return by itself like it should. I'll take any suggestions though. Good luck on yours, can't wait to see the finished product.

My throttle doesn't return like I would expect it to, but my expectations are based on newer bikes. Check the throttle slide in the carb, maybe it's dirty. Also check that you have the correct cable and that it's routed properly.

Lube the throttle cable , check that the cable routing is correct and that you don't have any severe bends in the cable routing . With the throttle sleeve off pull the cable and see if there are any resistance in either direction . You can can do this with the slide in or out of the carb .
You should also have some free play on the throttle sleeve , adjust the fitting on the throttle cable by the fuel tank . Good luck !

In addition to all the great suggestions, and if the problem persists,

Before doing anything.....there is a little tension adjustment screw with a lock nut at the base of the throttle body. remove the screw and lube with WD40 and replace.

If that does not work:

The throttle tube usually gets rusty with age. Clean the tube out with a 12GA Shotgun brass brush and some Hoppes gun bore cleaner or the like.

The throttle slide most likely has some mushroom along the top of the slide. Try to remove what seems to be the excess mushroomed metal. Clean the slide as smooth as possible. I wheel buff mine to a chrome like finish.

Clean the throttle housing tension spring at the base. You will see a small brass spring that gets goobered up with age.

Clean any rust from the handlebar.

Put a rag at the carb slide end (or remove the slide) and protect any paint and flush the throttle cable with brake cleaner or the like.

Lightly oil all parts and cable with 3-in-1 oil or my favorite Hoppes Gun Oil.

Reassemble throttle on the bar, but don't snug it yet. Assemble and replace the carb slide back into the carb. Lube lightly..WD40 works for me.

Then position the throttle on the handlebar so the throttle returns freely. Tighten the throttle housing screws.

I didn't see it mentioned; if it was forgive me, but if you have the correct cable; in the middle of the cable there is a set of screw adjustments that can get out of whack(unscrewed/poorly adjusted), in usual routing, you'll find it under the tank next to the frame.
