Searching for Mufflers(66' CA160)
Hello, new to posting on this particular forum but have utilized many posts on here about the CA160's. To be somewhat brief, I'm in the final stages of paint on a '66 CA160 I picked up from someone who'd disassembled it and decided it was beyond their comprehension. Busted exhaust studs on the head, among other problems, but everything has been addressed and solved(thanks to a donor motor). Had everything I could think re-chromed at Space Coast Plating located in my home-state of Fla, scoured eBay for NOS toaster panels, carb-covers, etc, but now I've hit a stopping point with the pair of mufflers that came on the bike. After the degraded chrome was chemically stripped, a number of pinholes (4-7) <1mm in diameter were exposed in the steel. According to the chrome shop the process of filling pits/holes with copper and then nickel before re-chroming won't be effective on exhaust components due to heat expansion. Regardless of whether that's true or not, I'm in need of a usable pair of mufflers to finish the resto. Anyone with any info or help is greatly appreciated! Thanks for looking!

The original mufflers for the 66 ca160, in good condition is a tough find for sure. I'm also rebuilding a 66 ca160 and hava a set of mufflers that are less than desirable. I plan to hide them with some Buco Twinmaster saddlebags that I am restoring along with the bike. You do have an option of buying the BMW style mufflers off of eBay. They fit with a little modification. I have them on my CA95 "build from scratch". Actually, they look pretty good. I may resort to buying them for my 160. Sorry, my set is bad and not worth the effort to restore.
Once in a while the original mufflers come up on eBay. |

Thanks for the info Spokes, I was afraid I might have to resort to the aftermarket mufflers. Since my initial post, I actually came across a right-side muffler in good shape but the left I have is just too far gone. Considering your status as the CA guru, I was wondering if you had any thoughts on welding the brackets from 160 mufflers onto some 95 mufflers. They seem to be more common than the 160 mufflers, so I may buy a pair to compare and possibly modify. As far as I can deduce the mufflers are identical in every way except the mounting bracket. Nice engine. That motor will look sweet on the bike. I see no reason that you could not retro fit the CA160 mounts on CA95 mufflers. But before you do, I am 85% sure the CA95 mufflers will mount right up as is.
My mufflers look worse everytime I look at them. I may consider building straight pipes. I built a set a few years back and they worked out very nice. |

I actually just got in touch with a gentleman out of state with a pair of good 160 mufflers. Depending on how much I can polish out they may work as is. Underneath that awful red and white paint there were some leftover spots of original factory black paint, so we decided to go with an equivalent jet black/mars black, but I'm considering throwing some pearl flake in the clear. The bike was actually in great shape aside from the homemade chain guard and fiberglass encased side covers. Front and rear fenders were great, probably due to the awful repaint in the mid-70's(I'm guessing). Hopefully finished photos soon!

Nice looking engine. I can't wait to see how it all looks when put together. I wish I had a line on a set of mufflers for it sorry.

First pair of mufflers:
[IMG][/IMG] After stripping they were swiss-cheesed. Finally, I was able to come up with a useable pair. One is from Tennessee, the other Nevada: Back to the chrome shop for round two tomorrow. Hey Narakun- you are gonna have one nice bike when done. I've had the same issues with mufflers and have been eying a pair for $$$ big bucks. Since this comes up ( at least in my mind) I gonna ask- (not trying to pry into your expenses)
For Chroming all of the important stuff it cost approx.... For chroming the exhaust, same question. I have a solid (I think) pair of mufflers and need to see a rough price comparison before deciding to pop for NOS. Thanks- Larz |

Hey Larz, the parts I ended up getting chromed were:
Lower shock covers Front and rear axles and spacer Front and rear shock mount bolts Front and rear brake arms Passenger foot pegs Handlebar bolts Cable ends Key switch ring Brake switch actuator Center stand "c" bracket Seat trim Left and right mufflers The grand total for all of that was near $700. The mufflers were quoted at 175 a piece plus hazardous waste taxes. |

I'm impressed. I've heard that shop was rather expensive- I'd consider that decent pricing and the pics seem to show a good quality. Since I'm on your other coast (St.Pete) they seem like a real possibility.

Well, everything is all together, running and idling nicely but the freshly rebuilt petcock is giving me trouble(join the club right?). I used the eBay kit that a few have used on here but I'm still having leaks. I just installed it today so I've been letting it sit to see if the seals may swell and stop the leak. I narrowed it down to the selector disc, but I'm stumped because it was nos and a smooth surface.

Don't worry , it'll probably soon be eaten by the ethanol anyway. Gotta be careful- I buy non ethanol fuel for my bike fuel supplies.
